John was born in Arlington, Texas, the son of Korean immigrants, his father Dr. John Moon, a political science professor at the University of Texas at Arlington.  He began the study of the violin while in elementary school, and became an All-State player as well as an All-State athlete by his early teens.  He is a protegé of Vincent Frittelli and the Galamian School, and has explored new approaches to the violin in his graduate studies at the University of Texas at Austin, where he holds a Master’s degree.  He is the Director of Chamber Music at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School, and is active in establishing related schools in Haiti.  Besides playing and touring with Atash, John also maintains an active classical performance routine with such groups as the Austin Symphony and the Austin Lyric Opera, is the Director of Operations for Ars Mundi, and deals fine violins through his company Moon String Network.
